The Guirigall at the Palau-solità i Plegamans
Behind the Pedra Llarga menhir lies not only thousands of years of history linked to the evolution of human societies, but also a rich intangible heritage of Palau-solità i Plegamans that has been with us since childhood. This oral tradition, closely tied to the Legend of Pedra Llarga, has been passed down from generation to generation to the present day. In recent years, various organizations connected to Catalan cultural tradition have collected this testimony of the town's history and reinterpreted it through folk music, festive imagery, and traditional dances. Now, all these synergies converge to bring this richness to the town square in the form of a popular and traditional festival.
Guirigall is our own version of the Legend of Pedra Llarga, based on the one Joan Amades describes in the chapter "The Devil's Bridge" in the book The Best Popular Legends. The Rooster of Can Cortès symbolizes the turning point between good and evil, between the wisdom of the farmhand and the devil's rage, between the everyday and the celebration. Its crowing becomes the disruptive element that will bring joy back to the village and overcome the darkness.
The Guirigall takes place on the second Saturday of June and is made possible by local cultural organizations, including the Deixebles del Dimoni de la Pedra Llarga, the Geganters i Grallers, the Colla del Ball de Gitanes, the Agrupació Sardanista, and the grallers of Palau-solità i Plegamans, all involved in the creation and performance of the scenes. The event is under the artistic direction of Jordi Rubio, with the collaboration of the Associació Pessebrista and Candombe Bantu, and features the interpretation of the Xerra and the Meques, who narrate the legend.
Also participating are the Deixebles del Dimoni de la Pedra Llarga, the Geganters i Grallers, the Colla de Ball de Gitanes, and the Agrupació Sardanista, all involved in the creation and performance of the scenes. The Associació Pessebrista also collaborates, responsible for the recreation of the Pedra Llarga and the performance of the Xerra and the Meques.
