Discover the Roca dels Bous with an immersive virtual reality tour
What if we could walk the same paths Neanderthals trod 50,000 years ago? What if we could do so with 21st-century tools that would help us understand how they lived, how they hunted, and why this territory was key to their history? This is the premise of Roca dels Bous Immersed, the new virtual reality tour at the Roca dels Bous archaeological site, a unique immersive experience in Catalonia that can be enjoyed every weekend.
Located in Sant Llorenç de Montgai, in a spectacular natural setting in the first foothills of the Pyrenees, Roca dels Bous is much more than an archaeological site; it is a true window open to the past, a space where science, dissemination and emotion go hand in hand.
A key site turns 50,000 years old
Tens of thousands of years ago, groups of Neanderthals regularly traversed this territory, following the migratory routes of their prey. The Cascalda Cliff, with its natural shelters and proximity to diverse ecosystems—forests, meadows, and rocky areas—became a strategic location for short but frequent stays.
The archaeological remains found at the site—stone tools, hearths, and animal bones such as those of deer, wild horses, and goats— show that Roca dels Bous was a key transit point for these hunter-gatherer groups. It was not a permanent settlement, but rather a temporary refuge, used repeatedly over thousands of years.
These characteristics make the site a fundamental piece for understanding the last moments of the Neanderthal presence in southern Europe, precisely at a time when anatomically modern humans were beginning to arrive in the Iberian Peninsula.
From scientific research to public experience
Archaeological research at Roca dels Bous began in 1988 and has since become a benchmark in the study of the Middle Paleolithic. The project is led by the Centre for Studies of Prehistoric Archaeological Heritage at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, with the aim not only of generating scientific knowledge but also of sharing it with the public.
In this respect, Roca dels Bous has been a pioneer in the musealization of open-air archaeological sites. The use of touchscreens, digital resources, QR codes, and 3D reconstructions has made archaeology accessible and educational to the general public, establishing it as a benchmark in Europe.
Roca dels bous Immersed: virtual reality enters the scene
Now, this project takes another step forward with Roca dels Bous Inmerso, a new type of visit that incorporates virtual reality glasses to offer an even more immersive experience. Thanks to this technology, visitors can see hyper-realistic recreations of the prehistoric landscape, observe what Neanderthal camps were like, and better understand how daily life was organized in this territory millennia ago.
Virtual reality doesn't replace a visit to the archaeological site, but rather complements and enriches it. The result is an emotional and educational experience that allows you to "travel through time" without losing direct contact with the real space, the rocks, the landscape, and the hidden history.
A proposal for all audiences
The tours are designed for small groups, with a maximum of 6 people, guaranteeing a close and personalized experience. It's an ideal activity for families with curious children, as well as couples, groups of friends, or anyone interested in heritage and history.
The price is €8 per person, and prior booking is required by writing to [email protected].

A cultural getaway to Noguera
Visiting the Roca dels Bous Inmerso is also a wonderful excuse to discover La Noguera, a region rich in landscapes, heritage, and opportunities for peaceful tourism. The area around Sant Llorenç de Montgai invites you to stroll, hike, enjoy nature, and complete your day with local cuisine.
Roca dels Bous Immerso is an innovative project that combines scientific rigor, cutting-edge technology, and cultural outreach in a stunning natural setting. It's a unique experience that allows you to understand our origins, connect with humanity's most distant past, and experience heritage in a different, immersive, and exciting way.
A visit that is not only explained... but experienced.
