Alfaro Year in Sant Andreu de Llavaneres

Sant Andreu de Llavaneres commemorates the bicentenary of the painter Nicolás Alfaro with the Alfaro Year.

Sant Andreu de Llavaneres has officially presented the Alfaro Year, a commemoration dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of Nicolás Alfaro Brieva (Tenerife, 1826 - Barcelona, 1905), a painter closely linked to the municipality and to the space of Ca l'Alfaro, the artist's former summer residence.

During 2026, the municipality will promote a cultural program to raise awareness of his life, his work, and the heritage value of Ca l'Alfaro. The initiative is led by the Llavaneres Museum, with the collaboration of the Municipal Archive and various local entities, such as the Municipal School of Music, the Institut Llavaneres, and the La Inestable theater company.

The program will include activities open to all audiences, such as dramatized tours, concerts, lectures, guided tours on Modernism, and a central exhibition at the Llavaneres Museum. This exhibition, entitled “Inhabiting the Landscape: Nicolás Alfaro and the Landscape Painters in Llavaneres,” will be open from November 6 to January 31.

To coincide with the commemoration, the Llavaneres Museum has added to its collection the first works of Nicolás Alfaro, among which stand out an Erard piano from 1880 with a painting by the artist and two landscape paintings.

Nicolás Alfaro Brieva was a prominent figure in 19th-century painting. Trained by artists such as Jenaro Pérez Villaamil and Carlos Haes, he was associated with Romanticism and landscape painting. After arriving in Barcelona around 1875, he came into contact with the Modernist movement and painters such as Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, and Joaquim Vayreda.

His connection to Llavaneres led him to acquire some land in the municipality, where he built a tower house, a romantic garden and other heritage elements that today form part of Ca l'Alfaro, one of the most emblematic spaces in the town.
