Visit: Monastic garden and plant capitals of the monastery cloister
This October, the 2026 European Heritage Days invite you to discover the Monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès from a different perspective: the connection between nature, Romanesque art, and monastic life. The guided tour , “The Monastic Garden and the Plant Capitals of the Monastery Cloister,” offers a journey through the plant motifs depicted in the stonework and the plants that were part of the daily lives of the Benedictine monks.
During the visit , you will discover the function of the monastic garden in the Middle Ages, a space dedicated to contemplation, work, and knowledge, and you will learn about some of the aromatic and medicinal plants used to prepare remedies. The tour will also allow you to closely examine the cloister's capitals and understand how leaves, fruits, and stems were transformed into ornamental elements full of symbolism.
A proposal to observe the cloister from a new perspective and discover how history, botany, and spirituality intertwine in one of the great examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture. This activity is organized in collaboration with Catalonia Sacra.
