Why in Cassà?
Cassà de la Selva is a village nestled between the Gavarres massif and the Selva plain, its history deeply intertwined with cork manufacturing. This industry has shaped the landscape, economy, and traditions of the village and the surrounding region.
Cork is an example of how nature and people can coexist in a system that shapes life, landscape, and culture in a sustainable and respectful way. A simple and useful product, it has contributed to creating unique ecosystems, landscapes transformed by human activity, and a livelihood for entire generations. It also demonstrates how a region can build and preserve its identity around an industrial activity that has generated its own culture, music, gastronomy, and traditions.
Cassà boasts a unique urban landscape linked to the cork industry of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, which resulted in exceptional architecture with clear Modernist influences. Among the landscapes you can discover, a product of this activity, the Les Gavarres forests stand out, dominated by cork plantations and featuring pines, oaks, scrubland, and holm oaks.
This economic sector also fostered the development of a unique culture, particularly its rich musical tradition. Music, the quintessential leisure activity for the tapas bar owners, remains alive today in the numerous singing events and concerts held throughout the town.
All these elements make up the cork culture in our territory and, to highlight its value, since 2017 we have celebrated the Tap and Suro Fair annually.
