Vilabertran

Vilabertran is a small municipality, next to the city of Figueres. The municipal term is quite reduced, it has 2.29 km² of extension located in the plain Empordà.

The territory is well watered by numerous wells and by the stream of Figueres, parallel with the limit with Vilatenim, speaker of Vilabertran. The municipality also limits with the municipality of Cabanes.

Located near the monastery of Santa Maria de Vilabertran, Vilabertran is formed by narrow and rectilinear streets that intersect at right angles.

Plaça de Catalunya and Plaza de los Hortelanos, together with the streets of Empordà and Santa María form the urban center of the town, where most of the commercial establishments, cafeterias and some of the modern municipal facilities are concentrated.

The municipality has a very interesting architectural, historical and cultural heritage. It highlights the presence of a jewel of Catalan architecture, one of the best preserved examples of the regular medieval canons, the magnificent Romanesque ensemble of the Canonica de Santa Maria de Vilabertran. This group has three different sectors of different chronology: the church, the cloister, around the old convent buildings, and the abbatial palace, declared a national monument in 1930.

Another building stands out in the town due to its singularity: the Torre de Reig. It is an interesting building of the late nineteenth century, modernist style and Gaudí lines, which had been owned by the painter Ramon Reig.
