The Major Festival of Gracia
Discover the Festa Major de Gràcia, one of the most emblematic celebrations in Barcelona, which every year, around August 15, transforms the Vila de Gràcia into a unique spectacle of colors, tradition and popular culture. This festival, documented for the first time in 1817, has its origins in the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, but over time it has become one of the most anticipated festivals of the summer.
One of its most characteristic features is the decoration of the streets and squares, a tradition that dates back to the mid-nineteenth century. The neighbourhood works for months to decorate every corner with surprising themes, turning the streets into authentic ephemeral works of art. This friendly competition encourages participation and means that every year you can enjoy streets transformed into medieval castles, tropical forests or fantasy worlds.
Over the years, the festival has evolved. During the 20th century, Vila de Gràcia became "the queen of the envelats", with large open-air dance halls where renowned artists such as Antonio Machín, Raphael and Joan Manuel Serrat performed. Although these envelats disappeared in the 1970s, the festival was able to reinvent itself and maintain its position as a benchmark of Catalan popular culture.
Today, the Gràcia Festival is synonymous with inclusion, sustainability and community work. The reuse of materials for decorations, the fight against any form of discrimination and the involvement of the neighbourhood make this celebration much more than a party: it is a symbol of identity and social cohesion.
Come and experience a week full of music, activities for all ages and an incomparable festive atmosphere. Don't miss the opportunity to experience a festival with more than 200 years of history, where the past and present merge to create a unique experience.
