Festival of Sant Roc in Malgrat de Mar

The Fiesta Mayor de Sant Roc is the result of a people's vote that took place in 1651, when the plague ravaged despite Mar. The inhabitants of the town were infected, then, as they considered that those calamities were frequent and the means natural little effective, to the saints Juan and Pablo and to San Roque, like special lawyers against the contagious evil. To honor them, particularly San Roque, they instituted that these days would be a celebration and a reason for ceremony.

This festival, which at the beginning was eminently religious, has led to the current Summer Festival, which has the highlight for San Roque, on August 16. Several events are celebrated, distributed between this day and the weekends of the month of August, such as habaneras, fast painting contests and sand castles, theater, festival dances, fireworks and other events on the beach and much more.. In 2012 the Festival of the Stunned was added to the celebration, a recreation by the Old Town of some of the scenes of the plague episode, like the one of the vote of town to be entrusted to San Roque.
