The legendary Montsoriu Castle, the sentinel of the Tordera Valley
Organized by: Trekultura
Hike through the eastern forests of the Montseny Massif Natural Park!
We propose a getaway to discover one of the most imposing medieval fortifications in Catalonia. Hidden in the eastern sector of the Montseny Massif Natural Park, the Montsoriu hill rises to 632 meters above sea level, a place that marks the geological boundary between the granite of the massif and the Guilleries, an area rich in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss.
We will find dense sub-Mediterranean vegetation dominated by shady holm oak groves with viburnum, cork oak forests, and oak groves on the north-facing slopes. These forests bear the imprint of ancient traditional trades such as cork harvesting, timber harvesting, and charcoal production. An environment that evokes legends, such as that of the Red Lady and the witch Na Guilleuma.
We will visit Montsoriu Castle, strategically built between the 10th and 14th centuries on the site of an ancient Iberian settlement. As we explore its walls, we will relive the era of the Viscounts of Cabrera and understand why this fortress is considered the great cathedral of Catalan military Gothic architecture.
From its battlements we will enjoy a fascinating 360-degree view, a privileged viewpoint over the valleys of Breda and Arbúcies, the forests of Les Guilleries, the peaks of Montseny and Montnegre and, on clear days, the blue horizon of the sea.
We're waiting for you!
