The Passion of the Bisbal d'Empordà

The Passion of the Bisbal d'Empordà has been documented since the end of the 18th century, and was performed until 1932. In 1943, a group of people from Bisbal d'Empordà wanted to recover it but on the day of the premiere, despite having the authorization of the "Local Board of Education and Rest", received a visit from the Civil Guard, who carried a telegram, with the prohibition of the civil governor of Girona, Mr. Luis Mazo Mendo, for "masons and separatists". The Passion was in Catalan and was performed by people from the town, many of them retaliated by Franco's regime.

In the Baix Empordà Regional Archive, there are stored, within the Germans Canet collection, the original scores of the orchestration made by Josep Canet, a disciple of Joan Carreras Dagas, and one of the founders of the Principal de la Bisbal. It is worth highlighting the work carried out by Albert Morcillo and David Granato, current director of the Corazón, to transcribe and adapt the music for orchestra and mixed voices.

Of the 58 original scenes, 19 are represented, those containing music and/or choral singing, and the rest are explained by a narrator. The representation by the Pastorets actors and actresses is very limited, due to lack of space. There are no sets, but only minimal elements to understand the work.

It began as a tribute to those who tried to recover it in 1943, and it seems that it will last over time.
