The main festival of the Virgin of the Riera de les Borges del Camp
Discover the Fiesta Mayor de la Virgen de la Riera de Les Borges del Camp, one of the most important celebrations in Baix Camp, which fills the town with tradition, devotion and emotion every year. This festival, with deep roots, honours the Mare de Déu de la Riera, an image found in the Alforja stream, which is the town's patron saint.
The festival began as a pilgrimage and, at the beginning of the second third of the 18th century, the celebration was moved from 15 August to 8 September, where it remains to this day. The tradition of searching for the image of the Virgin in her sanctuary dates back to that time and has been documented since 1859 in the parish custom. In 1899, the Reus press already described the festival of Les Borges del Camp, which largely coincides with the current events.
The festivities traditionally begin on the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th of September, with the 11th of September added to commemorate the National Day of Catalonia. But the most traditional and emotional day for the Borgencs is the 7th of September, the vigil, when the act of the Arribada is celebrated, where the image of the Mare de Déu is carried in procession from the hermitage to the village church.
One of the most special moments of the festival is the presence of the devils, who since the 1880s have come out every year on the night of 7 September to lead the procession with their wheelbarrows. This Devils' Dance is one of the few living examples of the old way of dancing in Baix Camp and is considered the greatest exponent of the region.
This festival is much more than a religious celebration, it is a tradition that reflects local devotion and pride, where brotherhood, passion and popular culture are present in every corner of the town.
I came to live a unique experience where devotion, culture and tradition merge to create unforgettable moments.
