Matiners Fair in Avinyó

War of the Matiners, or Second Carlist War, which took place in Catalonia between 1846 and 1849. Avinyó preserves two very representative witnesses of that historical period.

The first is the Battle of Avinyó, which took place on 16 November 1848, when the Isabelline army faced a large number of Carlist groups that had gathered in the surroundings of the town. This battle resulted in one of the few victories of the early risers over the Isabelline troops.

The second is the Soldiers' Tower, an optical telegraphy tower built during the revolt, which was part of the communications network that the Isabelline army established throughout Catalonia.

On the Sunday of the Matiners Fair, various historical performances are held in the streets of Avinyó to illustrate the causes of the Matiners revolt and explain the events that occurred in Avinyó at that time.

At the same time, the streets of the centre are transformed into a mid-19th century atmosphere, and are filled with various stalls. Particularly noteworthy is the possibility of tasting local products, such as wine and pork products, which are an essential part of the gastronomy of the area.
