Habanera and Traditional Music Cycle in Tàrrega

The Habanera and Traditional Music Cycle in Tàrrega is a cultural proposal that brings together various musical performances throughout the summer.

Tàrrega invites you to enjoy traditional music with a new edition of the Habaneras and Traditional Music Cycle, a program that combines sardanas, popular songs and collective dances in various spaces of the city.

The Cobla Tàrrega will perform two sardana dances in Plaça del Carme on Saturdays, July 18th and August 22nd, at 8:00 pm. The group was formed in 2009 by a group of young musicians, many of whom came from the traditional Spanish song instrument class at the Tàrrega Municipal School of Music. Under the direction of Joan Farreny, the group revives the name of a former local ensemble and keeps the city's sardana tradition alive. The ensemble combines young musicians with seasoned performers from Tàrrega and other towns in the region. The result is a dynamic and well-established project with a constantly evolving repertoire and the sardana as its central focus.

The program continues on August 7th in Plaça dels Comediants with Ballaveu, who will offer a dance workshop at 8 pm and a concert at 10 pm. The duo, formed by Patri Garcia and Xavier Rota, revives traditional songs created for dancing and performs them with only voices, guitar, and traditional percussion. Their repertoire spans the musical landscape of Catalonia, featuring flat dances from Pallars, jotas from the Ebro, habaneras from the Empordà, ballets, sardanas, and partner dances that have filled squares and tents for generations. Their voices play, converse, and intertwine in a direct, harmonious, and deeply moving performance.

Ballaveu received the 2021 Enderrock Award for best folk song for Arriba del coche | Uno, dos, rato, a demonstration of his ability to renew popular musical heritage without losing its essence.
