  3. Xavier Miserachs Photography Biennial in…
From 2 August to 18 October
Palafrugell

On August 14, 1998, the renowned photographer Xavier Miserachs died prematurely.

Closely linked to the Empordà region since the 1960s, when he produced several reports on a still nascent tourism industry that would profoundly transform the area's society and landscape, Xavier Miserachs (Barcelona, 1937-1998) forged a relationship with our region that extended far beyond the professional sphere. His open, affable, and restless nature fostered this connection. After several extended stays, he settled in Esclanyà in the 1980s and, driven by an innate curiosity, actively participated in the cultural life of Palafrugell, where he found loyal collaborators and friends.

A year after his death, these friends paid tribute to him with the inauguration of the 1st Xavier Miserachs Photography Biennial.

Throughout its various editions, the Xavier Miserachs Photography Biennial has presented works by the honored artist and photographers of his generation, as well as by international figures who influenced them and by younger creators who see photography as a way of life. In parallel, it has undertaken important work recovering previously unknown archives, significant for their artistic, cultural, and historical value.

The main objectives of the Biennial are to promote photography as a form of artistic and cultural expression among the general public; to disseminate our photographic heritage, both past and present; to support young photographers; to recover from anonymity the work of local authors, amateur or professional, who have documented the life of our country; and to contribute to the visual education of young and old.

Active collaboration with various cultural entities in Palafrugell, photographic archives, foundations, museums and other institutions dedicated to photography, as well as the support of the Palafrugell City Council, the Banco Sabadell Foundation, the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Girona Provincial Council, are essential to achieving these goals.

The growing number of visitors, an increasingly broad reach and its remarkable impact have made the Xavier Miserachs Photography Biennial a benchmark festival, one of the oldest in Catalonia and also one of the most established.

Don't miss it!
