The Quinquennial Festivals of Ulldecona
Discover the Ulldecona Quinquennial Festival, one of the most important and exciting celebrations in the area, which every five years, in years ending in 4 and 9, fills the town of Ulldecona with tradition, devotion and popular festivals. This festival, with deep roots, honours the Virgin of Mercy, patron saint of Ulldecona, and combines religious and festive events, becoming an unmissable event for all locals and visitors.
The festivities begin with the town crier who gives the starting signal for a few days full of activities. The most exciting moment comes when the people of Ulldecon go to the hermitage to look for the Virgin of La Pietat, and from that moment on, the town prepares to receive her. The streets are filled with floral decorations, coloured papers and handmade decorations, with a great participation of the townspeople. The procession, which goes through all sectors of the town, is one of the most exciting events, and the neighbours receive the image of the Virgin with great devotion and joy.
In addition to the procession, various cultural, religious and recreational events are held during these days of celebration. You can enjoy traditions such as the Dance of Shawls, known as “Xim-xim” or “Jota de Ulldecona”, the parades of giants and gralleros, the bulls in the street and in the square, the correfocs, as well as concerts by music bands, jota meetings and sports competitions. The streets are filled with music, dance and a great energy that transmits the passion of this festival.
The grand finale of the festivities comes with the fireworks display, which lights up the sky and closes these days full of culture, brotherhood and fun. The Ulldecona Quinquennial Festivals are much more than a tradition: they are a symbol of local identity and pride, where each street, each dance and each act tells a story of roots and passion.
I came to live a unique experience where devotion, culture and fun come together to create unforgettable moments.
