Ulldecona
The first population letter of Ulldecona, is obtained on April 3, 1222, for the town located in the Castle.
Jaime I established the river Sénia as the border between the Principality and the Kingdom of Valencia, after these moments of political instability, Ulldecona moved to the plan and became official through the second population letter on April 12, 1273 and the original nucleus was formed of the current population being called then "Sant Lluc de Ulldecona".
Ulldecona, Alcanar and la Sénia were created in order to be a border; but the structure of Ulldecona seems to have been designed, from the beginning, to be larger and more organized. The historic center, walled until the 19th century, has the typical shape of a Roman city, with two perpendicular axes; the first, which would coincide with the current Calle Mayor, began at the Tortosa portal (current town hall) and ended at the Valencia portal (Plaza de Sales and Ferré). The second axis, formed by the current San Lucas (del Peso) and San Antonio streets, began at the Morella (or Peso) portal and ended at the Mar (or Abeurador) portal.
The walkway around the old wall was about 1,100 meters long and would coincide with the current Murada de Dalt and Murada de Baix streets. However, work continues with the hypothesis that the original core would be smaller than the one described above and could be located between the Order house on one side and the streets of Pilar and Roger de Llúria (del Embut) on the other. The oldest surviving plan of the town is from the French War and there are still no buildings outside the walls, but it is very likely that the enclosure was very full and that many houses extended their walls to the walls.
