The Passion of Cunit

Of the extensive annual program of the Ateneu Cultural Alba de Cunit, an entity founded in 1994 and organizer of the performance, La Pasión is the flagship due to its importance and difficulty: more than 40 people on stage who are not professional actors but people from the town, like all members of the assembly team.

It was born from the challenge accepted by Araceli Martín, co-founder of Ateneu, a few years after its founding. Araceli, an avowedly believing person, knowledgeable about sacred texts and history, wrote the script collecting the narrative of the four evangelists.

In approximately an hour and a half, The Passion of Cunit recalls the most emblematic scenes of the last days of Jesus Christ: the Holy Supper, the Prayer in the Garden of Olives, the Judgment of the priests and of Ponç Pilate, Death and Resurrection. Every year something new is incorporated into a script well known to Cunit viewers after twenty-three years of performance, such as the Sermon on the Mount scene or the recreation of the Pietà.

The Ateneu Alba de Cunit therefore inserts the tradition of the Passions in the Baix Penedès region with a small, great representation made with a lot of love: even the hand-sewn tunics and decorations from the first edition are preserved and used.
