Roca dels Bous

This summer, the Roca dels Bous archaeological site offers an innovative and exciting way to discover our distant past. With Roca dels Bous Immers (Immersed), the new virtual reality tour, visitors can delve into the Neanderthal territory of the Noguera region and experience what life was like 50,000 years ago, walking through the same area inhabited by these prehistoric human groups.

Located in Sant Llorenç de Montgai, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Roca dels Bous is a key Middle Paleolithic site. The archaeological remains found there—stone tools, hearths, and animal bones—indicate that this area was repeatedly used by Neanderthals as a temporary shelter during their migrations, taking advantage of a rich and diverse environment.

The new immersive experience combines a guided tour of the archaeological site with the use of virtual reality headsets, which allow visitors to visualize recreations of the prehistoric landscape, Neanderthal camps, and daily activities. This technology does not replace archaeology, but rather makes it more understandable and accessible, offering an educational and emotional experience for all audiences.

The Roca dels Bous project is promoted by the Center for Studies of the Archaeological Heritage of Prehistory of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and is a benchmark in the musealization of open-air sites and in the use of digital technologies applied to archaeology.

The times are Saturdays and Sundays at 09:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 5:00 PM. The price is €8 per person, and advance booking is required by emailing [email protected].

An ideal proposal for a cultural and family getaway that combines history, technology and nature in a privileged environment of La Noguera.
