Guided tours along the Albesa heritage route
Organized by: Albesa
A tour of our village will allow you to discover an important part of Catalonia's history. Almost every civilization that has passed through the region has left its mark on Albesa. The Romans bequeathed to us one of the most outstanding archaeological sites in the province of Lleida: the Roman Villa of Romeral, where you can admire magnificent mosaics and the Medusa sculpture. During your visit to the villa, you can learn about the customs and traditions of our Roman ancestors.
The Arab civilization bequeathed to us the Albesa irrigation canal, a fundamental engineering feat for the socioeconomic development of the town. Thanks to these new irrigation systems, Albesa experienced a period of great economic prosperity until the 12th century. The Castle of the Moors and the old mosque, upon whose remains our parish church was later built, date from this period.
Between the 12th and 13th centuries, Albesa was a border town situated between the Muslim kingdoms and the County of Urgell during the Reconquista, and later between the Crown of Aragon and the County of Urgell itself. This location gave it crucial strategic importance, as it controlled the ford of the Noguera Ribagorçana River, located on the important road that connected Lleida with Àger.
Once the conflicts over territorial control ended, Albesa achieved great economic and social prosperity, thanks to the richness and fertility of its lands. The splendor experienced during the 13th and 14th centuries is reflected in the magnificent 14th-century stone altarpiece of Our Lady of the Rosary, which is preserved in our parish church. It is the most outstanding work of the mysterious and still unknown Master of Albesa.
This period of prosperity is also evident in the construction, during the 14th century, of the bridge over the Noguera Ribagorzana, in the numerous references to Albesa present in various historical texts and in the song of praise that Alfonso X the Wise dedicated to the Virgin through Cantiga 146, entitled "The wormwood of Albesa".
To complete your visit to our village, from the viewpoint located at the foot of the Albesa cemetery you can contemplate the beauty and vastness of our fields, transformed thanks to land consolidation and irrigation provided by the Algerri-Balaguer canal.
Cycling enthusiasts can also explore our trails through orchards and enjoy the wonderful rainbows formed in the sky by the small drops of water sprayed by the sprinklers.
