History
Albesa is first mentioned in 1003, during the Battle of Albesa, where Count Ermengol I of Urgell was captured and the Bishop of Eln was killed . Despite some Christian victories, the castle remained in Muslim hands for quite some time. In the 11th century, the Counts of Urgell received tributes (parias) for the castles in the area. In 1120, the mayor of Lleida handed the castle of Albesa to Ramon Berenguer III, who ceded it to Ermengol VI. However, in 1126 it fell back into the hands of the Almoravids and was not finally recovered until 1145.
In the following centuries, the castle passed through several feudal hands, such as Pinoso and Cabrera. In 1163, the town received a charter. During the struggle between James II of Urgell and Ferran de Antequera (15th century), Albesa remained loyal to the count and the castle was destroyed. In 1415, King Ferdinand granted the town and its ruins to Diego Fernández de Vadiello.
In 1598, 48 families lived there, with a local government formed by a council of noblemen and a paer. In the 18th century, the Count of Fuenclara held his lordship until 1835. During the French War (1808) and the Carlist Wars (1836), Albesa was defended and sheltered troops in the ruins of the castle.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the population reached its historical peak, but declined in the wake of the Spanish Civil War, which also led to the destruction of the church bell tower. The traditional agricultural economy gradually transformed into a more market-oriented activity, with fruit trees in the orchards and dryland cereals. In 2001, the arrival of water from the Algerri-Balaguer Canal allowed irrigation of almost the entire area, which gave a major boost to agriculture and halted the aging of the population. This change, along with the arrival of international immigration, increased the local population and opened up new prospects for the town.
Historical and Cultural Heritage
Church of Our Lady of the Assumption
This simple and spacious parish church was completed in 1790. It is notable for preserving a stone altarpiece from the second half of the 14th century, considered the most important of a group of altarpieces in the Lleida region characterized by the disproportion between the architectural and decorative richness and the sculpture.
Remains of the Old Castle
Remains of the ancient castle of Albesa, conquered by the Christians in 1098, are still preserved. These ruins bear witness to the strategic importance of the municipality during the Middle Ages.
Roman Villa of Romeral
Discovered in 1969, this Roman villa is one of the finest examples of a large estate of its kind in inland Catalonia. During the 2005 excavations, a sandstone piece with a sculpted Medusa head, dating from between the 2nd and 4th centuries BC, was unearthed.
Albesa is a town that combines history, culture, nature, and tradition, offering visitors an enriching and authentic experience in the heart of La Noguera.
