Who was Saint Ramon of Peñafort?
Saint Raymond of Peñafort (1180-1275) was a Catalan Dominican religious, recognised as one of the greatest specialists in canon law of the Middle Ages. Born in the castle of Peñafort, in Santa Margarita y los Monjes, he studied at the University of Bologna, where he received his doctorate in civil and canon law. He was confessor to Pope Gregory IX and King James I the Conqueror, and compiled the "Decretals", a collection of canonical laws that were a reference for the Church for centuries.
The link between San Ramón de Peñafort and Masllorenç is evident in the dedication of the parish church of the municipality to the saint. The current building, in classicist baroque style, was built in the 18th century on the site of a previous chapel erected after his canonisation in 1601. The bell tower, built in 1855, is crowned by an iron angel known as "Lorenç".
Masllorenç's Fiesta Mayor is celebrated in honour of San Ramón de Peñafort, thus strengthening the bond between the saint and the local community. During this festival, various religious and cultural activities take place that reflect the devotion of the inhabitants towards their patron saint.
