Candelaria Festival in Calafell

Calafell celebrates the Fiesta Mayor de la Candelaria once again!

The Fiesta Mayor de la Candelaria is a winter festival that, after being lost for a time, was revived in 1992. This festival concentrates its events in the old town of the municipality and is dedicated to the Virgen de la Cueva, an advocation that is venerated in the church of the Castillo de la Santa Cruz and that is celebrated on the same day as Candelaria.

The veneration of the Virgin of the Cave has roots that go back to the early Middle Ages. A Romanesque carving is documented, which, unfortunately, was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. This tradition is related to the Catalan culture of the "found mothers of gods," an aspect that enriches the history and identity of the people.

During the Fiesta Mayor, visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities, including concerts, parades, and religious events, among others. The celebration is a perfect opportunity to experience the local culture and participate in traditions that have endured through the years.
