Winery route in El Molar
Organized by: El Molar
The Wine Route is a unique wine tourism initiative located in the heart of the Priorat region, in the municipality of El Molar, where two prestigious wine appellations converge: the DOQ Priorat and the DO Montsant. This project invites both wine lovers and curious travelers to enjoy a complete wine experience that goes beyond simply tasting good wines and delves into the very essence of Catalan Mediterranean culture and landscape.
A unique wine experience
The Wine Route is designed for anyone who wants to learn more about what goes into a glass of wine: the history, the people, the land, and the processes that transform grapes into wines with character and personality. Through guided tours, tastings, and sensory experiences, visitors can discover wineries of different types and sizes, each with its own story and distinct winemaking style. These range from wineries with their own vineyards and family projects to century-old cooperatives and wineries with unique connections to other wine regions.
Some of the notable wineries included on this route are Cal Grau, known for its connection to regions like Ribera del Duero and La Rioja; Celler De Muller, with a long history and international acclaim; and Clos Galena and Clos Berenguer, which combine tradition with innovation. Also part of this wine route are wineries focused on producing distinctive local wines, such as Alicia y Josep Viticultors, Orto Vins, and Grifoll Declara, among others.
A dive into the Priorat
The landscape surrounding El Molar is an integral part of the experience. Vineyards stretch across the terraces and steep slopes characteristic of the region, where the Mediterranean climate and mineral soils give Priorat wines their distinctive intensity and depth. This environment is not only ideal for cultivating quality grapes, but also offers a stunning natural setting for visitors, with panoramic views and corners steeped in history.
The journey doesn't end at the wineries; the route also connects with the village of El Molar, a place with deep rural roots, tranquil squares, historic buildings, and traditions that invite you to stroll and discover. The village's authenticity adds value to the visit, allowing tourists to experience the essence of Priorat beyond the tastings, and integrating culture, gastronomy, and landscape into a single experience.
Gastronomic and cultural
This route also includes dining options that complete the wine tourism experience. Local establishments, such as Lo Safreig and Bar Lo Rebost in El Molar, offer menus and locally sourced products to pair with the wines tasted at the wineries. This gastronomic approach reinforces the connection between wine and local cuisine, showcasing how the region's flavors complement each other to create a complete sensory experience.
Wine as an element of discovery
Although the Wine Route is centered in Priorat, it's part of a broader active wine tourism movement in Catalonia, where routes like those in the Empordà, Alella, and Pla de Bages appellations offer similar experiences in other wine-producing regions. These routes provide opportunities to explore local wines, learn about the history of each appellation, and discover landscapes and villages that have grown up around vineyards.
The Cellers Route is much more than a visit to some vineyards, it is an invitation to experience wine in all its aspects, from the land to the glass, with a perspective that merges tradition, landscape, history and Mediterranean culture.
