El Molar
El Molar is a peaceful and welcoming municipality located in western Priorat, in an environment shaped by rolling hills, vineyards, and a past marked by mining and farming. Covering an area of 22.85 km² and consisting of a single population center, the village sits at an altitude of 228 meters on a mountain range overlooking the Siurana River valley, shortly before its confluence with the Ebro.
A small place, but with an intense history, a deeply rooted identity and a cultural heritage that has been recovered and reclaimed in recent decades.
A municipality with history and landscape
The location of El Molar has favored human settlement since prehistoric times. The village retains the essence of the Priorat villages: narrow streets, stone houses, and a community life that revolves around the square and the church.
The natural environment is one of the municipality's greatest attractions. The Siurana River, which flows along the southeastern border, creates riverside landscapes ideal for walking or wildlife watching. Outside the town, vineyards, olive groves, and almond orchards stretch out, forming the typical agricultural mosaic of the Priorat region.
Mining heritage and historical memory
An essential part of El Molar's identity is linked to lead mining, which marked the economic and social development of the 20th century.
For this reason, the municipality has recovered this legacy through outreach spaces such as the Mina Loussa - Linda Mariquita Interpretation Centre, which uses immersive audiovisuals and scenography to explain the daily life of miners, schools and families during the Civil War and the years that followed.
Places of interest
Mina Loussa-Linda Mariquita Interpretation Centre
The Interpretation Centre features a significant audiovisual display. Three specific productions, set in scenographic environments, tell the story of daily life in a hospital and a school during the Spanish Civil War.
This immersive space allows you to understand in a very close way the life of mining families and the essential role that mining played in shaping El Molar.
Church of Sant Roc
The parish church, dedicated to Saint Roch, is Neoclassical in style, with the archivolt of the portal adorned with lithographs and the corner edges framed with ashlar blocks. Inside, it preserves devotional elements and a serene atmosphere that reflects the town's long spiritual tradition.
The Prehistoric Station of El Molar
The El Molar Prehistoric Site (7th-6th centuries BC), linked to the late Hallstatt B culture and explored by Salvador Vilaseca, is particularly interesting. The site provides key information about the area's first inhabitants and their way of life, making it an archaeological landmark in the Priorat region.
Calvary and old mining areas
This site features archaeological remains and structures linked to the exploitation of mineral resources, an essential activity for the municipality for decades. The access trails allow visitors to closely observe the mining legacy and enjoy a truly Priorat landscape.
Serrat del Molar viewpoint
An elevated spot offering panoramic views of the village, the Siurana Valley, and the Montsant mountain range. Ideal for photography and short walks. It's a perfect vantage point to appreciate the relationship between the village and its natural surroundings, especially at sunset.
Bank of the Siurana River
A natural area of great ecological interest, with riparian vegetation and a variety of birds. A peaceful place for walking, wildlife watching, or simply relaxing. The proximity of the Siurana River creates a cool and pleasant microclimate that contrasts with the agricultural landscapes of Priorat.
Cultural life and festivals
El Molar maintains an active community life with deeply rooted celebrations. The Cultural Days in April fill the town with activities: concerts, lectures, workshops, competitions, and theater.
The Sant Roc Festival (August 16) is the most important event of the year, with dances, fire runs, children's activities, floats and popular events that bring together locals and visitors.
El Molar encapsulates the essence of Priorat: ancient history, mining heritage, living traditions, and a spectacular landscape. Visiting it means discovering an authentic, peaceful environment steeped in cultural significance.
