Enjoy wine and wine tourism in Catalonia
In Catalonia, you can visit more than 300 wineries with history, stroll through vineyards, enjoy the rich heritage found in their municipalities, or even marry wine and gastronomy. Eleven DOs are spread over an area of approximately 70,000 hectares, which have made Catalonia the leading producer of quality wine in Spain.
Do you know that in Catalonia there are eleven wine Designations of Origin (DO)? Do you know where they are? Do you know the details that differentiate each other? Because as you know, Catalonia is a land of contrasts, so much so that the fruits we find according to the geographical area are also varied and diverse. Do you already know them?
DO Pla de Bages
In the center of Catalonia is a wine island protected by the mountain of Montserrat, in which poor soils and climatic rigor are resolved in short grape yields, but of excellent quality.
Red wines have an important weight, but Picapoll is the most emblematic native variety, and gives rise to light and exquisite white wines.
The vineyard barracks, dry stone constructions, give a characteristic feature to the landscape and are a sample of the winemaking tradition of Pla de Bages.
DO Costers del Segre
The mountain and the plan overlap along a large domain, Costers del Segre, which brings together a wide variety of soils, airs and landscapes. The link that brings them together is the innovative character and technological bets of its wine growers.
The blacks of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Tempranillo lead the diversity of wines produced; powerful, balanced and structured.
DO Alella
In Alella, the vines are rocked by the sea breeze, while their roots sink in soils protected by the Coastal mountain range. Just a step away from Barcelona and very close to the sea, the DO Alella vineyards produce excellent light, fragrant and crystalline white wines. The Pansa Blanca variety is the protagonist.
DO Conca de Barberà
Modernist wineries, known as wine cathedrals, are an important part of the cultural heritage of this wine region.
Freshness is the most relevant quality of wines that have one of their unique features in the Trepat native variety, together with other varieties such as Macabeo and Parellada or Garnacha Ink and Tempranillo.
DO Priorat
Priorat is synonymous with the highest mention of quality: the qualified designation of origin. The geography of this area of ancient winemaking tradition is spectacular, with terraces and steep slopes where terraces have to be built to strengthen the vineyards and where the vines are shined with blackboards, a slate stone that gives wines with great intake.
The Priorat are mostly black, made especially with cariñena, black and hairy grenache, and have a very high graduation, with very complex, fleshy and round aromas.
DO Montsant
With most of its territory in the Priorat region , the Montsant is defined as an active, modern designation of origin, but with long tradition and a close connection with its landscape marked by the hardness of the Montsant mountain range and a climate of contrasts Red wines with Garnacha and Cariñena are the main varieties of the territory.
DO Empordà
Empúries is considered as the gateway where the Greeks introduced the cultivation of the vine in the peninsula. The sea and the mountain profile vineyards that curl up to face the tramontana and that are rooted in hard terrain suitable for the production of quality wines. The range of Empordà wines is very wide.
Red wines are of high quality, full- bodied, well-constituted and harmonious, sometimes with the nuance of careful aging. White, fresh and tasty and also rosé wines that are characterized by a well-defined cherry color are made. A singularity of the area is the Garnacha del Empordà, a natural sweet wine made with the grape variety that gives it its name.
DO Terra Alta
The hills and the Ebro river form hollows where the vineyard extends through the dry valleys on natural terraces, in lands of very optimal characteristics for the production of quality wines. With a rooted winemaking tradition this land produces 90% of the White Garnacha. Rancid and liquor wines are also renowned.
DO Penedès
To speak of Penedès is to speak of one of the wine regions with the most production and international projection in Catalonia. The vineyards climb undulating hills washed by the sea to Montserrat in very good land for the cultivation of the vine.
The diversity of wines is the most prominent feature of this DO.
DO Tarragona
The wine tradition of the Tarragona area dates back to Roman times because of its mild climate and its proximity to the sea. It is characterized by the diversity of wines, with a predominance of whites, of moderate graduation, fruity aromas and a marked and pleasant body. The sweet and dry rancid liqueur wines present frank aromas and flavors; Highlights the Classic Tarragona and the wine of mass.
DO Catalonia
The innovation forms the identity of this denomination of origin that extends through the main territories of viticultural tradition of the country; Adds 50,000 hectares of vineyards and groups about 200 wineries. The extension and diversity of its territory offers to enjoy a wide range of authorized grape varieties, allowing great creativity when making coupages, where native and international coexist often coexist. And it also allows for greater marketing options, with a mention that is synonymous with work well done in export markets.
