Pla de l'Estany

Pla de l'Estany is a small but charming region located in the north of the province of Girona, known for its natural and cultural wealth, centered around Lake Banyoles, the largest in Catalonia. This lake is the heart of the region and one of its main attractions, not only for its beauty, but also for the numerous activities it offers in a peaceful and privileged environment.

The capital of the Pla de l'Estany, Banyoles is a welcoming town with a rich historical and cultural heritage. Its historic centre preserves streets with a marked medieval feel, with points of interest such as the Plaza Mayor, the Monastery of Sant Esteve and the Church of Santa Maria dels Turers. Banyoles is famous for its lake, which has been the scene of international rowing competitions, such as the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, but also for its peaceful walking or cycling routes around the lake, which offer magnificent views and allow you to enjoy nature.

The Estany de Banyoles is a place of scientific and ecological interest, with a great variety of flora and fauna. It is ideal for water sports such as rowing and canoeing, or simply for relaxing and strolling around the area. In addition, the pond is surrounded by local legends that add a special charm to the place, such as the famous story of the Banyoles monster.

Apart from Banyoles, the Pla de l'Estany has picturesque villages such as Porqueres or Crespià, where time seems to have stopped and you can enjoy an atmosphere of calm and authenticity. In addition, the natural heritage of the region is very outstanding, with places such as the Serinyà Caves, a prehistoric complex in which remains of the first human communities that inhabited the area have been found.

Cultural heritage is also relevant, with museums such as the Banyoles Regional Archaeological Museum, which exhibits prehistoric finds and brings us closer to the ancient history of the region.

The gastronomy of Pla de l'Estany is marked by local products, with traditional dishes such as escudella, Carnival stuffings and artisanal sausages. In addition, fish from the lake, such as eels or carp, are one of the main ingredients in local cuisine.

Come and discover the beauty of Lake Banyoles, explore its natural landscapes and enjoy the tranquillity and authenticity of Pla de l'Estany, a region where nature and history intertwine.
