Procession of the Holy Burial of Tarragona
Discover the Holy Burial Procession of Tarragona, one of the most solemn and emotional events of Holy Week in Tarragona, declared a Heritage Festive Element of National Interest by the Generalitat of Catalonia. This historic procession, held every Good Friday, travels through the streets of the historic centre of Tarragona, bringing together more than 30,000 people who silently witness what the poet Salvador Espriu called "Death on the Walk".
The procession begins and ends in Plaza del Rey, in front of the Church of Nazareth, and winds through the cobbled streets of the Upper Town, passing by emblematic places such as Paseo de San Antonio, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza de las Cols and Rambla Nueva. The Armed Forces of the Royal and Venerable Congregation of the Purísima Sangre and the twelve brotherhoods and associations that accompany the twenty floats that represent the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ take part.
Each brotherhood follows a traditional order, and the brothers, dressed in their characteristic tunics, are in charge of carrying on their shoulders the sculptural floats that symbolize the most important moments of the Passion. Some of these figures had to be rebuilt after the Civil War, but devotion and collective effort have kept this tradition alive. In addition, more than 3,000 people actively participate in the procession, including penitents and bands that fill the air with drums and bugles.
The Holy Burial Procession is not only an expression of faith and devotion, but also a living heritage that reflects the history and culture of an ancient city. It is a unique experience that captivates believers and non-believers alike, a moment of silence, reflection and respect that transforms the city of Tarragona into a place of contemplation and spirituality.
Come and experience Holy Week in Tarragona and be thrilled with a procession that spans the centuries, keeping its essence and grandeur intact.
