Holy Week in l'Espluga de Francolí
Holy Week in l'Espluga de Francolí, Vimbodí and Poblet, Prades and other parishes of the Pastoral Unit will be celebrated with a wide program of religious and traditional events taking place from March 28 to April 6.
During these days, the community will celebrate the central moments of the liturgical calendar with celebrations, processions and activities that combine spirituality, tradition and popular participation.
The program begins with the Lenten and Palm Sunday observances, which include the communal celebration of forgiveness and the traditional blessing of palms and Passion Masses in various parishes throughout the region. These celebrations mark the beginning of a particularly significant period in the Christian life.
During the Easter Triduum, the events continue with the Holy Thursday celebrations, including the Last Supper and the vigil of the Holy Hour, and with the Good Friday events, which include the Stations of the Cross, Passion plays, and various highlights of popular tradition. Among these, the participation of the Armats de l'Espluga de Francolí, documented since the 19th century, stands out; they offer displays and participate in the most solemn events of the day.
One of the most emblematic moments is the Procession of the Holy Burial, which takes place on Good Friday night through the streets of l'Espluga de Francolí. The procession passes through various parts of the town with the participation of religious brotherhoods, religious scenes, musical bands, and institutional representatives, making it one of the most solemn and participatory events of the local Holy Week celebrations.
On Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil is celebrated with the blessing of the Paschal candle and water, and the traditional ringing of bells, which announces the celebration of Easter. The following day, Easter Sunday, Masses are celebrated in different parishes, and the Caramelles are sung, a deeply rooted tradition in the region.
The program is completed with cultural activities and visits, such as visits to the old church of l'Espluga de Francolí, a historical monument from the 13th and 14th centuries, or to Santa María la Mayor de Prades, as well as popular celebrations of Easter Monday, with meetings and prayers in various hermitages.
A program that combines faith, tradition and heritage, and invites residents and visitors to experience these days so significant for the community intensely.
