From 10 to 12 July
Sant Feliu de Guíxols
This event is over.

During the summer months, Sant Feliu de Guíxols hosts one of the most important music festivals in the area, as well as the oldest: the Porta Ferrada Festival.

The festival takes place in different venues, those best suited to host each show: music, theater, workshops... In addition, it brings together both national and international artists, making it one of the most special festivals on the Costa Brava.

The festival takes its name from Porta Ferrada, an ancient fortified gate dating back to the 10th century and part of the Sant Feliu de Guíxols monastery. The combination of music and art in a historic and picturesque setting has been one of the defining characteristics of the Porta Ferrada Festival over the years.

The programming and variety of activities is very extensive.

History

The Porta Ferrada Festival was born in 1958 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, in a context where the city aspired to project itself beyond sun and beach tourism and place culture at the heart of its identity. Rooted in the musical tradition of the municipality—the birthplace of composers like Juli Garreta—the festival was initially held in front of the monastery, next to the historic Porta Ferrada, which gives it its name and which over the years has become its great emblem.

In its initial phase, the festival was organized by the City Council. From 1983 onwards, the Joventuts Musicals association took over its management, initiating a period particularly focused on classical music and the participation of local and international performers. Those years were crucial in establishing the festival as a stable, recognized cultural event deeply rooted in the region.

A pivotal moment in its evolution came with the 25th edition, coinciding with the appointment of Albert Mallol as artistic director, a role he continues to hold today. Under his leadership, the festival broadened its scope and incorporated new languages and disciplines, such as jazz, rock, and dance, ultimately becoming a 360-degree festival with a diverse, contemporary program open to a wide range of audiences.

The festival's growth has also been accompanied by a transformation of its venues. From the first concerts in front of the monastery, the activity moved to Plaza Abadía, and later, new venues were added to accommodate more ambitious formats. In 2003, the creation of Espai Port, located by the sea, marked the beginning of a new era and became one of the festival's most iconic stages. Later, spaces like the Guíxols Arena allowed for large-scale productions and increased capacity.

Throughout its history, the festival has brought together top-tier national and international artists, such as Lou Reed, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Cocker, Patti Smith, Bryan Ferry, Joan Baez, Wilco, Two Door Cinema Club, Belle & Sebastian, New Order, Tom Jones, Salif Keïta, Jordi Savall, the Munich Opera Ballet, Joan Manuel Serrat, Pat Metheny, Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, and Ludovico Einaudi, among many others. This artistic breadth has contributed to building a diverse and inclusive program, capable of attracting a wide range of audiences and generations.

In recent years, the Porta Ferrada Festival has consolidated a public-private management model that combines institutional support, artistic direction, and collaboration with cultural operators. Now, the festival is embarking on a new phase under the management of the promoter Barcelona Events Musicals.

At the same time, the festival has strengthened its ties with Sant Feliu de Guíxols and its community, with a significant presence of volunteers and a strong sense of belonging among the audience. Today, with over six decades of history, the Porta Ferrada Festival is the oldest summer festival in Catalonia and one of the country's leading cultural events.

Enjoy the summer and the best shows!
