Festival of San Juan in Torredembarra

The Sant Juan festival is also the Baix a Mar Festival in Torredembarra, full of bonfires, dances, festivals, habanera singing, "llaguts" regattas, fireworks, castles and various popular activities to welcome the summer.

In Torredembarra, the festival is a true fire festival, with the participation of the Torredembarra Devils Dance and the "Virgília".

The lighting of the bonfires marks the beginning of the festivals, dinners with cake and cava, shows, dances and lots of partying until dawn. It is a great popular festival on a night that, according to tradition, is magical.

The festival of San Juan maintains many symbols of its pagan roots of worship of the sun and the celebration of the summer solstice. The traditional cake derives from a roscón made with eggs, a large round piece that evokes the sun. It should also have very specific dimensions: twice as long as it is wide, as the day lasts twice as long as the night.

With popular bonfires, the fire of the sun was imitated to avoid droughts and ensure that water, earth, wind and fire were favorable the rest of the year. Dances were danced around the fire, like planets around the sun that want to make it grow with the air they raise. By burning what we no longer want, we also burn a stage and clean up the past. Flames also, according to popular belief, protect from evil spirits.
