Torredembarra
Torredembarra is located in a privileged location, 12 km from Tarragona and 80 km from Barcelona, and close to many tourist attractions on the Costa Dorada. The municipality is made up of several population centers and covers an area of 857.8 hectares. The population has experienced significant growth in recent years and currently has 15,000 registered inhabitants.
Torredembarra has been a farming and fishing village since medieval times, and this duality is reflected in its culinary offerings. The town offers a variety of recreational opportunities: water sports, cultural visits, nature trails, shopping areas, and more.
Over time, Torredembarra has established itself as a prominent summer resort, especially for families.
What to visit
The Castle
The current Torredembarra Town Hall is the only newly constructed civil building from the Catalan Renaissance that remains in Catalonia.
Lluís Icart, lord of the town, began its construction in 1565 and completed it fifteen years later. It was conceived as a fortress-like residence to dominate the town center. With a square floor plan and four corner towers, it was built at the highest point of the town. Following the Mediterranean model, it has a central courtyard with arcades, around which the rooms are arranged. Between the main entrance and the courtyard is a rectangular space resembling a portico, covered with a vault attributed to the master architect Pere Blai.
The Wall
Two entrance gates remain from the old wall that surrounded the town in the 17th century: the Padrinas gate (between the Riera road and Plaza del Castell) and the Bassa gate (on Ample Street). Remains of a buttress can also be seen on Mañé y Flaquer Street.
The Parish Church of San Pedro
Between the streets of Eduard Benot and Joan Güell stands the current church of Sant Pere, joined to the old one to form an architectural complex completed in 1680. Later, during the 18th century, the temple was enriched with several ornamental elements: the baroque organ (installed in 1705), the 1705, the end of the island.
Inside the church, two pieces are particularly noteworthy: the painting of Saint Rosalia and the baroque organ (1705).
Pere Badia Residence
Dating from the late 18th century and built in the Baroque style, the hospital dates back to the foundation established by Pere Badia in 1783 to care for the town's poor sick. The building, which includes a Baroque chapel, is arranged around a large, cloister-like interior courtyard with exotic vegetation.
It currently houses several services, while a new annex building houses a senior residence.
Cal Bofill
This old chalet, surrounded by palm trees and located at the end of the Paseo Marítimo, was built at the beginning of the 20th century by one of the first families to spend their summers in Torredembarra. It currently houses the management offices of the Els Muntanyans Area of Natural Interest (EIN).
The Lighthouse
This facility entered into operation on January 1, 2000. It is the last lighthouse built in Spain during the 20th century, the work of architect Josep Maria Llinàs. Its focal plane height is 58 meters above sea level and 38 meters above ground level, with a geographic range of 20 miles. It is the lighthouse with the tallest tower of all those in Catalonia.
The Tower of the Villa
Directly opposite the Church of San Pedro Apóstol is the Town Tower. It is the oldest preserved building in the municipality, probably dating from the 12th or 13th century and built in the Mudejar style. It is believed to have formed part of the old castle.
The Villa del Moro
This site is made up of various structures: a thermal complex, a service area, and a residential area. Analysis of the remains found reveals two construction stages: the first corresponds to the Republican period (2nd century BC to 1st century AD) and the second to the Augustan period (1st century AD to 2nd century AD).
Antoni Roig Board of Trustees
It is a stately Modernist-style building, inaugurated in 1892. The former Roig School was built thanks to the Torrens native Antoni Roig i Copons, who founded the Roig Trust at the end of the 19th century. This institution was dedicated to providing education to the town's boys and girls, as well as establishing a fund to provide for poor maidens when they married, a tradition that is still maintained today.
Currently, it houses several municipal education and social welfare services, as well as municipal entities.
Cal Xeco
Declared a cultural asset of local interest, this building is in an excellent state of preservation and was built on the site of the old Castell de Clarà, which dates back to medieval times.
Family Tourism
From its location in the heart of the Costa Dorada, Torredembarra brings together enough scenic, cultural and artistic attractions to be, in itself, the ideal destination to enjoy a holiday: the sun, its strip of sea, the Icart Castle (16th century), the Villa Tower (12th century), the Church (19th century), the lighthouse, the fish market, the Els Muntanyans Natural Beach, the Roquer...
In addition, the Torredembarra Tourist Board is working diligently to expand the municipality's tourist offerings with an extensive agenda of activities aimed at family tourism, in addition to the creation of a new Torredembarra brand as a promotional tool and the publication of comprehensive guides to the municipality and its services.
In its commitment to quality family tourism, the Board of Trustees, together with the Department of the Environment, has defined more than 12 marked routes for walking or cycling in the municipality, and is preparing a comprehensive guide of activities for the months of July and August, ranging from sports and gymnastics to workshops and children's entertainment programs.
