Vermouth and Cuisine in Modernist Reus with La Teva Ruta
When we talk about modernism, we mainly refer to architecture, but what were other aspects of life like, such as food?
Modernism also reached the kitchen and the new air of renewal could be seen in different spaces of the city: Beyond the peasant market, the grocery stores began to offer other more innovative products that were arriving from the rest of Europe such as dehydrated soups, broth cubes, prepared sauces... Classic authors of cookbooks emerged, the most luxurious restaurants adopted French cuisine, culinary fusions of various cultures were created, the differences between workers and the bourgeoisie were also evident in food and a city like Reus saw the growth of a powerful industry: that of vermouth.
We talk about all this and much more in this route that will take us to see the most outstanding modernist buildings in the city, while we discover the daily life and culinary customs of the moment. The route includes a visit and tasting at the Vermuts Rofes Restaurant, an old vermouth factory.
