Montgai

Montgai is a town in the municipality of La Noguera located in the Baix Sió area, bordering the Bellmunt-Almenara mountains to the south and Montclar to the north. The municipality of Montgai also includes the population of Butsènit.

The municipality focuses its economic activity on agricultural development, highlighting especially the agriculture of cereal, corn, alfalfa and fruit trees. On the other hand, we must also highlight the livestock activity of sheep, pigs, cattle and poultry.

Of the historical complex of Montgai, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (11th century) stands out in the urban center. There is also the presence of a castle of Islamic origin received by Ramon Berenguer I in the year 1050, of which only some walls remain today that have become part of private houses.

Within the old town, there is also an alley of medieval origin known as Lo Carreró.

The surroundings of Montgai also house vestiges of the Civil War, as is the case of the trenches and machine gun nests in the Tossals mountains, from where the area of the Pont de Balaguer cape, in front of the Segre, could be controlled.

As for Butsènit, its 18th century baroque church stands out, where some paintings of the same style have recently been found that show great artistic quality. Among them appears the image of San Nicolás, patron saint of the town.

Crossing the Cal Valeri archway we find, in the interior space of a portal of the old medieval wall, the remains of a Renaissance ceiling made of molded plaster. The church square also houses silos dug into the rock where barley was formerly stored.
