Salt Festival of L'Escala

From 20/09/2024 to 22/09/2024
L'Escala

The Salt Festival was born in 1997, to commemorate the III centenary of the construction of the Alfolí de la Sal, an old warehouse where salt arrived by sea, coming from the salt flats of Ibiza or Torrevieja and distributed to the towns of the interior.

It is a festival with popular participation that commemorates and pays homage to L'Escala's fishing and salting origins, recreating what daily life was like over a hundred years ago. It includes a sample of seafaring trades, scenes from the daily life of the time, traditional dances and songs, and seafaring cuisine.

Over the years , music has become an essential component of the festival, since it begins with a concert by the Indika Choir and ends with a popular dance at the end of the festival. Popular music is present with habaneras, tavern songs, songs from children's games...

The festival is organized by the Historical Archive and the Anchovy and Salt Museum, it is a historical recreation in the incomparable setting of the beach of the old port of L'Escala and incorporates ancient elements of its intangible heritage such as the Dragon Dance and that of the Farandola.

Since 2015 it has been officially included in the Catalog of the Festive Heritage of Catalonia.

It is held annually on the third Saturday of September.
