Ullà

In its beginnings, Ullà was a small municipality with a population dedicated mainly to agriculture. Lately, its proximity to Torroella de Montgrí has increased the number of inhabitants and has transformed its characteristics. The municipal term rises to the crest of the Ullà mountain, which forms its limit and which, at its highest point, reaches three hundred meters in height.

Lovers of history will like to know that a community of Augustinian monks had once existed in the town of Ullà, in a monastery located on the banks of the Ter of which there are practically no remains today. An old chronicle explains that, in the summer of 1178, the community was the victim of an attack by Saracen pirates from Mallorca who had landed on the coast near Ullà.

The current parish church of Santa María de Ullà was built at the end of the 18th century and was blessed in 1804. That same year the image of the Virgen de la Fossa, from the 12th century, a polychrome wood carving of great interest and value, was moved which is worth a visit. The church is located on a very dominant site, with its back to Montgrí and open to the plain. Archeology fans have an important point of reference in Ullà: it is the site known by the name of Cau del Duc, a cave in the Ullà mountain located at a point near the crest from which you can enjoy a Magnificent perspective over the entire Ter plain.
