Cervià de les Garrigues

Cervià de les Garrigues, at 444 meters above sea level, was founded in 1202. It is the only population center of the municipality, which also includes the uninhabited Vallxeca and the old town of Las Besses.

Within the term is the depopulated and old term of the Besses. The place of Les Besses was established in 1225 by a letter of population granted by Arnau Punyet and his wife, and in 1265 a license was obtained to build the parish church. There are only a few rows of the old feudal castle of les Besses above a rock.

The municipal term of 34.42 km2, is in the southern sector of the region of Les Garrigues, in the upper valley of the Set River, and borders the municipality of La Pobla de Cérvoles (which separates the Set River), Juncosa, L'Albagés, Castelldans, Juneda, Les Borges Blanques and L'Albi. The main crops are the olive tree, the almond trees and the vineyards.

The most interesting places of interest are:

• The Parish Church of Sant Miquel Arcàngel: it was rebuilt in the 18th century; it preserves the classicist façade, with a central part crowned by a triangular pediment and a small rose window, a wide nave and chapels in the buttresses and a square bell tower with a body over the octagonal.
• The House of the Villa: built in 1912, is remarkable for its majestic construction entirely of stone. The architect chosen for the project of the consistorial house was Francesc de P. Morera i Gatell, who at that time occupied the position of Municipal Architect of the city of Lleida.
