Millennium of Cervera
Organized by: Cervera
Ancient identity, shared future
In 2026, Cervera will commemorate a thousand years of history, identity, and community. Since the city's name was first documented in 1026, Cervera has been a privileged witness to the passage of time and an active participant in the history of Catalonia. Throughout this millennium, the city has forged its own identity, built upon the effort, creativity, and collective spirit of generations of Cervera residents.
The Cervera Millennium celebration was conceived as a comprehensive and contemporary commemoration that transcends a strictly historical perspective to connect with today's citizens. It is an open, inclusive, and participatory project, designed with sustainability, equity, and innovation in mind, that aims to foster collaboration among institutions, organizations, and the community.
Throughout 2026 and part of 2027, the city will become a great cultural stage, with a wide and diverse program of activities: conferences, exhibitions, theatrical performances, art installations, concerts, heritage routes, gastronomic encounters, displays of popular culture and educational initiatives.
What are we commemorating?
The Millennium of Cervera celebrates the granting of its town charter in February 1026, when Countess Ermesenda, her son—Marquis and Count Berenguer Ramón I—and his wife Sanza signed the document ceding the uncultivated lands of Cervera to Guinedilda and her children . This legal and political act marks the founding of the town and constitutes the starting point of its historical development.
From this founding moment, and throughout the centuries, Cervera became the stage for key events in Catalan history: the General Courts of 1359, which established the institutional foundations of the current Generalitat of Catalonia; the signing of the marriage contract of the Catholic Monarchs, a symbol of a new political era; the founding of the University by Philip V, which transformed the city into an intellectual center of Catalonia and a benchmark of the Enlightenment; and the impetus of the republican and trade union movements of the 20th century, which reaffirmed its critical, civic, and committed spirit.
Don't miss it!
