In this article, we will talk about which Camino de Santiago itinerary is suitable for cycling, what time of year is the best to undertake this challenge and we will give some tips for choosing the necessary equipment to fully enjoy this experience.

Choose the best route to travel the Camino de Santiago by bike

There are several possibilities that the Camino offers, since it has several cycle routes. Among the most popular is the French Way, because it includes challenging slopes such as Cruz de Fierro (León) or O Cebreiro (Galicia), for its good signage and for having many services along the route.

Another option to consider for traveling the Camino de Santiago by bicycle is the Northern Route, which stands out for the beauty of its surroundings, but which is more demanding and combines mountain sections with road. On the other hand, with less difficulty, there are the Camino Portugués and the Vía de la Plata, with very little unevenness and firm paths.

The ideal time to discover the Camino de Santiago by bicycle

  • In May or September: since they are months in which we will have milder temperatures and where the chances of rain are lower.?
  • Between July and August: it is the one chosen by many, because we traditionally have vacations on these dates. However, in the middle of summer it will be hotter and there will be a greater concentration of pilgrims, so it is recommended to take extreme precautions when traveling and reserve accommodation in advance.
  • In April or October: in these months the temperatures are pleasant, but rain is more frequent and we may even be surprised by some snowfall at high altitudes.?
  • Between November and March: a season only suitable for experienced cyclists, due to mud, rain and snow.

Adequate equipment to do the Camino de Santiago by bike

One of the things that will determine the experience is the choice of bike, the best option for the route is a mountain bike, due to its adaptability to the terrain. Furthermore, taking into account that we are likely to carry panniers or bikepacking for luggage, the best choice would be a rigid bike, with a front suspension system.

In addition to the equipment, the main recommendation is that we carry the least amount of luggage possible, with only what is essential, since the weight will make it difficult to overcome the unevenness of the route and there are shops and businesses along the way.

In conclusion, traveling the Camino de Santiago by bicycle is a different experience than doing it on foot, more intense but also challenging. Before undertaking this challenge, it is advisable to take these tips into account and prepare well to enjoy this beautiful journey.
