Creixell's Main Festival

Popular culture and folklore are manifested in the Sant Jaume Festival in Creixell.

It has been celebrated since ancient times; the Ordinances of Creixell already mention this festival. It is traditional for Saint James' Day for the authorities to be escorted in procession to the church, a procession known as the "going to the Solemn Office," accompanied by a folk group or a band.

It is interesting to see how over the years the growing tradition is still in force, in this Procession also involving, along with the authorities of the City Council, the Justice of the Peace, the town's Pharmacist and the Chief of the Local Police.

The image of the Patron Saint James is carried in procession through the streets of the town.

Upon leaving the church, the traditional Sardana dance is performed.

For some years now, the Popular Procession has included the giants and big-headed figures of Vila, the Esmarris giants gang from Creixell, the Giants and Big-Heads gang from Creixell, the Devils Dance gang from Creixell, the "Units pels Gegants" group, the trabucaires of the Serrallonga Dance and the "espurnes" of Creixell.

The Sant Jaume Festival is actually Creixell's smaller, more elaborate festival. But as time passed and agriculture gave way to tourism, the Sant Jaume Festival became more successful in terms of events and gained greater importance.
