El Bosc de l’Andy

There are forests you explore on foot, and others you discover with your imagination. Andy's Forest, located in the Comella area of Andorra la Vella, certainly belongs to the latter. This family-friendly route invites young and old alike to delve into a natural environment where the trees, paths, and hidden details among the vegetation form part of a story starring Andy, the tamarro, the parish's guardian.

Far from being a conventional excursion, the route is designed as an interactive experience. Along the way, children discover how Andy lives, who his friends are, and what his mission is: to care for the forests and mountains of Andorra la Vella. The activity combines hiking, play, and environmental education in an affordable, entertaining way, perfect for sharing quality time as a family.

A short, easy route full of surprises

The route begins next to the Andy the tamarro statue, where a symbolic "forest door" marks the entrance to his world. From this point, the trail follows a 1.6-kilometer circular route with approximately 100 meters of elevation gain. The walk is easy and can be completed in about an hour and a half, although the time may be longer if children are entertained by completing the activities, observing the surroundings, or searching for the different elements of the story.

This moderate length makes Andy's Forest a good option for families who want to introduce children to hiking without proposing an overly long or demanding excursion. The trail allows for a leisurely pace, allowing you to stop when needed and enjoy the mountain atmosphere. Along the route, two footbridges have been installed, and some sections have been protected with railings, features that contribute to making the path more comfortable and safe for children.

The route's greatest strength lies in the fact that each section serves a narrative purpose. It's not simply about following a path, but about piecing together Andy's story while discovering hidden corners, characters, and installations integrated into the landscape. This combination keeps children's curiosity alive and transforms the walk into a small mission: understanding how the forest works and why it's so important to protect it.

Who is Andy, the tamar of Andorra la Vella?

The Tamarros are mythical beings linked to the legends and popular imagination of Andorra. There are seven of them, one for each parish, and they all share an essential responsibility: to watch over the country's natural environment. Andy is the guardian of Andorra la Vella and, like the other Tamarros, possesses a magical portal hidden in the forests he protects.

The character of Andy was created in 2020 as part of the Tamarros project, promoted by Andorra Turisme, with the participation of its creator, Pere Moles, and the collaboration of the local councils. In August 2023, the Comú d'Andorra la Vella presented Andy's Forest, a family-friendly initiative that expands the character's world and allows visitors to learn more about his way of life and his work in the forest.

Through this fantasy, children are introduced to very real concepts: not littering, respecting animals, observing without disturbing the environment, and understanding that nature conservation is a shared responsibility. Andy acts as an imaginary guide, but the message he conveys is very concrete: everyone can contribute to keeping natural spaces clean and healthy.

A notebook to turn walking into a game

Before starting the route, it's recommended to stop by the Andorra la Vella Tourist Office to pick up the educational booklet that accompanies the experience. The material includes activities, games, and excerpts from the story of Andy and his friends. In this way, the various elements installed in the forest cease to be mere decorations and become clues that children can identify along the way.

The activity book helps to set the pace of the outing and is especially useful for keeping children engaged. Reading, searching, interpreting, and playing while walking transforms the trail into an open-air classroom. Furthermore, it allows each family to adapt the activity to the children's ages: younger children can focus on finding shapes and details, while older children can delve deeper into the story and the messages about environmental awareness.

The circuit's construction itself reinforces this philosophy. The facilities have been built using recycled materials from the forest, selected to blend into the landscape and ensure their durability. Efforts have also been made to minimize the impact on the flora and fauna. Even some decorative elements, such as the birdhouses, are designed to prevent animals from entering them and disturbing their habitat.

Tips for enjoying Andy's Forest

Although it's an easy route, it's advisable to wear appropriate footwear for hiking in the mountains, bring water, and dress according to the weather forecast. Before setting out, especially during the colder months, it's recommended to check the terrain and look for snow or ice. It's also important to stay on the marked trail, respect the facilities, and take all your trash with you.

Andy's Forest is a simple yet brilliant idea: a short walk that sparks the imagination, fosters a connection with nature, and imparts values without turning it into a boring lesson. For children, it's an adventure starring a magical being; for adults, it's an opportunity to rediscover the forest through their eyes.

So, if you're looking for a family outing in Andorra la Vella that combines scenery, play, and fantasy, let the forest gate guide you. You might not see Andy moving among the trees, because tamarros are quick and discreet, but you're sure to find his trail. And, above all, you'll return home with a clear idea: protecting nature can also be a great adventure.
