Alcarràs
Alcarràs is one of the municipalities that make up the Segrià region. Located at the western end of the region, in contact with the Baix Cinca and bordering the areas of Saidí and Fraga, both in the Baix Cinca, and with the Segrianenses of Torres de Segre, Sudanell, Gimenells and Pla de la Font and the capital Lleida, from which it is only 8 kilometers.
The term extends from the right of the Segre (SE limit of the territory), which continues along the Segrianense plan, to the sector of platforms divided into hills and planes that separate the Segre and Cinca basins (Coscollar mountain range, direction NS and 301 m of altitude), to the wide area of Vallmanya, to the west of this mountain range, and to the Cinca basin. In the northern sector, where the lands of Montagut are located, it also rises up to 300 m through the Serra Grossa. The territory is irrigated by the Pinyana and Aragón and Catalonia canals and, in lands near the Segre, the Remolins irrigation canal. To ensure irrigation in times of drought, the area is full of ponds and swamps, among which the Arroz reservoir and the ponds of Don Laureà, Teresa and La Brisa stand out.
The Town of Alcarràs is characterized by an economy based mainly on agriculture and livestock, leading the list of municipalities with the most important agricultural census in Catalonia. However, in recent years it has also been surrounded by an extensive network of industrial estates, which bring together the agri-food and service industries.
The main communication route is the N-IIa highway, which connects the town with Lérida and Fraga. The modern route of the N-II (current A-2 highway), built to avoid its passage through the urban center of Lleida, passes to the north of the town. A road connects it with the towns of Vallmanya ( Pinoso ), Gimenells and Almacelles. A path leads to Montagut, and a track from Vallmanya leads very close to Saidí. The railway line from Barcelona to Madrid and the high-speed train between these cities pass through the NE sector of the term.
Its strategic location, a link between the Iberian Peninsula and Europe, and its modern and powerful communications network, give it great possibilities of easily accessing the major European capitals and business centers.
The distances from Alcarràs in other cities are: in Lleida 8 Km, in Barcelona 150 Km, in Zaragoza 140 Km, in Huesca 100 Km, in Tarragona 100 Km, in Madrid 450 Km, on the French border 270 Km, in Valencia 325 Km.
