Alcarràs
Alcarràs is one of the municipalities that make up the Segrià region. It is located in the westernmost part of the region, in contact with the Baix Cinca and borders the municipalities of Saidí and Fraga, both in the Baix Cinca, and the municipalities of Torres de Segre, Sudanell, Gimenells and Pla de la Font in Segrià and the capital Lleida, from which it is only 8 kilometres away.
The area extends from the right of the Segre (SE boundary of the territory), which continues along the Segrianense plain, to the sector of platforms sectioned into hills and plains that separate the Segre and Cinca basins (Coscollar mountain range, in a NS direction and 301 m above sea level), to the wide area of Vallmanya, to the west of this mountain range, already in the Cinca basin. In the northern sector, where the lands of Montagut are located, it rises up to 300 m along the Serra Grossa. The territory is irrigated by the Pinyana and Aragón and Cataluña canals and, in lands close to the Segre, by the Remolins irrigation ditch. To ensure irrigation in times of drought, the area is full of ponds and marshes, among which the Arroz marsh and the Don Laureà, Teresa and Brisa ponds stand out.
The town of Alcarràs is characterised by an economy based mainly on agriculture and livestock, leading the list of municipalities with the largest agricultural census in Catalonia. However, in recent years it has also been surrounded by an extensive network of industrial estates, which bring together the agri-food and service industries.
The main communication route is the N-IIa highway, which links the town with Lleida and Fraga. The modern layout of the N-II (current A-2 motorway), built to avoid the latter passing through the urban centre of Lleida, passes to the north of the town. A road connects it with the towns of Vallmanya ( Pinoso ), Gimenells and Almacelles. A path leads to Montagut, and a track from Vallmanya leads very close to Saidí. The railway line from Barcelona to Madrid and the high-speed train between these cities pass through the NE sector of the town.
Its strategic location, a link between the Iberian Peninsula and Europe, and its modern and powerful communications network, give it great possibilities for easy access to the major European capitals and business centres.
The distances from Alcarràs in other cities are: in Lleida 8 Km, in Barcelona 150 Km, in Zaragoza 140 Km, in Huesca 100 Km, in Tarragona 100 Km, in Madrid 450 Km, on the French border 270 Km, in Valencia 325 Km.
