Macarulla: El bosc dels menairons
Very close to the village of Pal, in the Andorran parish of La Massana, lies a forest where imagination isn't just for children. Hidden among pines, ferns, and mountain trails are the menairons, tiny, tireless creatures that protect one of the valleys' best-kept secrets: the white stones of Andorra. To discover their world, you must explore the Menairons Forest, the first of the Macarulla Magical Little Trails and one of the most unique family excursions in the country.
The experience transforms a simple walk into an interactive story. For four kilometers, families follow clues, complete games, and observe details integrated into the landscape. Children cease to be mere hikers and become helpers of the menairons, with a mission that demands curiosity, attention, and a desire to play.
An easy route that transforms the forest into a fairy tale
The pace will depend on the stops and the time spent on the challenges. The starting point is on the N4 main road, at kilometer 8.5, near Pal and in the direction of the Pal Arinsal ski resort.
The route follows an authentic mountain path. This naturalness is part of its charm: you're not visiting a theme park, but a real forest where fantasy subtly emerges among the trees. The installations, created by local artists and artisans using natural, environmentally friendly materials, blend seamlessly into the landscape and encourage you to notice what might normally go unnoticed.
The Menairons Forest was the first route of the Macarulla project, designed to make mountain hikes more accessible and enjoyable for children. Along the trail, there are several stops, and very soon, some mysterious suitcases appear, belonging to Corax, a black raven who has arrived in the forest with his mate. This discovery sets the adventure in motion.
The Menairons, Corax and the secret of the white stones
According to the route's lore, the menairons are so small that thousands of them could fit inside a needle tube. They are born on the night of the summer solstice from a type of fern, a kind of fern guarded by dragons, and possess inexhaustible energy. Their task is to watch over the white stones buried beneath the Pal forest, stones capable of capturing the power of nature and fueling the imaginations of Andorra's children.
The tranquility is shattered by Corax's arrival. Driven by fear and ignorance, the raven hides the tools the menairons need to work. Without them, the white stones could lose their energy, and the forest would be thrown into disarray. This is where the young explorers come in: following the notebook, they must recover the objects and uncover what lies behind the raven's plans.
The story unfolds through challenges that encourage observation, movement, and cooperation. There's a magic portal accessed after swearing an oath of respect to the forest; games with pinecones; tests of aim and balance; searches for animals and plants; tools lost among the trees; and a small village where you get a glimpse into how these fantastical beings live. Each stop keeps the excitement high and prevents the walk from becoming tedious.
Besides being entertaining, the activities convey environmental values without complicated lectures. Participants learn to move quietly, respect the vegetation, not to disturb the facilities, and not to leave any trash. The mission itself teaches that nature functions as a large team; animals, plants, water, rocks, and people must coexist in balance.
The guidebook and the Macarulla diploma
To fully enjoy the experience, it's advisable to purchase the guidebook beforehand, available for one euro at Andorra's tourist offices. Its pages explain the history, pose riddles, and guide the family through the different stages. It's recommended to bring a pencil or pen, as some exercises are solved directly in it.
At the end of the hike, the adventure can continue at home. VisitAndorra allows you to register using the Macarulla form, download an official certificate to certify your little ones as true "Macarulles," and access other activities. This makes the excursion a special memory and can encourage them to discover more magical trails in the collection.
When to go and what to bring
The best time to explore the Menairons Forest is from mid-spring to autumn, when the weather is generally more pleasant. The route can also be done in winter, but snow changes the conditions. In that case, snow boots or snowshoes, walking sticks, warm clothing, and checking the weather forecast beforehand are essential.
Regardless of the season, you must wear hiking boots, bring water and some food, follow the marked route, and closely supervise children under three. The trail is not accessible for people with reduced mobility. It is also essential not to light fires, uproot plants, collect all litter, and handle the trail markers with care.
The Menairons Forest is much more than an easy hike: it's an invitation to walk with your eyes open. While adults enjoy the natural surroundings of Pal, children discover that behind every tree trunk there might be a tiny house, a hidden tool, or a clue left by Corax. And when the trail ends, a question lingers among the trees: have the menairons managed to protect the white stones and keep the imagination alive?
