Conjunt Històric de les Bons Les Bons
Located high above Encamp, this historic site offers a true immersion into Andorra's past, revealing key aspects of its architecture, social organization, and daily life throughout the centuries.
The site comprises the church of Sant Romà, a water reservoir carved into the rock with a sophisticated irrigation system, and the remains of a fortified house, including a tall tower that may have served defensive or surveillance purposes. The complex also includes two modern-day dovecotes, which illustrate the traditional use of these spaces for breeding pigeons, a valuable resource for both food and farming.
The Church of Sant Romà, in Lombard Romanesque style, was consecrated in 1164 and has retained its characteristic architectural elements over time, such as the semicircular apse and the bell tower. Inside, you can admire a reproduction of the original Romanesque paintings, now preserved in the MNAC, which decorated the apse with the central image of Christ in Majesty surrounded by the tetramorph and the apostolic college. Also preserved are some original 16th-century mural paintings, in late Gothic style, depicting scenes of paradise and hell, evoking the idea of salvation and damnation, recurring themes in the religious art of the period.
The altarpiece dedicated to Saint Romanus is another highlight of this exceptional collection. Renaissance in style with late Gothic influences, it features rich iconography depicting various episodes from the life of the saint, patron saint of the church.
This heritage site not only attests to the importance of Romanesque architecture in Andorra, but also reflects the country's artistic and cultural evolution over the centuries. All of this makes this site a privileged space for understanding Andorra's historical, artistic, and architectural legacy.
