Castle (Cubelles)

In the heart of Cubelles' historic center stands Cubelles Castle, one of the town's most emblematic heritage buildings. With nearly a thousand years of documented history, this ancient fortification bears witness to the town's evolution, from its medieval origins to the present day. Its architecture and the cultural uses it has housed make it a key point of interest for discovering local history.

The castle is first documented in 1041 and was built on the remains of an ancient Roman villa, demonstrating that the site was occupied long before the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the building underwent several modifications that gradually transformed its structure and function.

The most significant renovation took place between 1674 and 1676, when the old medieval fortification was extensively remodeled and enlarged. This intervention transformed the castle into a three-story, rectangular civic palace, adapting it to the residential needs of the time and giving it much of its current appearance.

In 1989, the Cubelles Town Council acquired the castle with the aim of recovering and preserving this important element of the local architectural heritage. Since then, restoration work has been underway to conserve its structure and adapt some spaces for new uses.

On the ground floor, which has been partially restored, the Municipal Tourist Office and an exhibition dedicated to the legacy of Charlie Rivel, the stage name of Josep Andreu i Lasserre, the famous Catalan clown born and who died in Cubelles, have been installed.
