May 22, International Day for Biological Diversity
The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated every year on May 22, commemorating the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992. The day aims to raise awareness and knowledge about biodiversity, as well as to promote its conservation and sustainable use.
Catalonia is a region of remarkable biological richness, thanks to its diverse landscapes, encompassing coastal, mountainous, and plain areas. This diversity allows visitors to enjoy landscapes ranging from the beaches of the Costa Brava to the peaks of the Pyrenees, passing through wetlands, Mediterranean forests, and volcanic areas. This variety of habitats supports a rich flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the region.
Sustainable tourism has established itself as a form of responsible tourism that seeks to minimize environmental impact and promote biodiversity conservation. In Catalonia, this type of tourism allows visitors to immerse themselves in nature in a respectful way, participating in activities such as birdwatching, interpretive hiking trails, forest bathing, and visits to protected natural areas.
The experiences not only offer direct contact with nature, but also contribute to the local economy and environmental awareness.
Catalonia has been recognized with the Biosphere Responsible Tourism Destination certification, awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute, which highlights the region's commitment to sustainability and the conservation of natural heritage. Furthermore, nine of its natural parks have been accredited with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism, reflecting the effort to balance tourism with ecosystem preservation.
