Reus's Sant Pere Festival
Discover the Sant Pere Festival, the great celebration of Reus, declared a Heritage Festival of National Interest by the Generalitat. This festival, which has its origins in the 12th century, when the city was founded, has become one of the most emblematic in Catalonia, full of tradition, music and shows.
The festival of Sant Pere and Sant Pau, celebrated on June 29, is one of the oldest in the city, and its origin dates back to the very moment when Reus was founded. Since its foundation, devotion to Sant Pere grew with the arrival of a relic of the saint in 1625, which gave rise to a great festival to celebrate it, marking the beginning of the consolidation of this date in the festive calendar of Reus.
Over the centuries, the procession of Sant Pere has been the main focus of the festivities, accompanied by the seguici festiu (festive parade) and the city authorities. During the September Revolution of 1868, religious events were suspended, but the cercaviles de gegants (giants), the mulassa, traditional dances and balls continued to be an essential part of the celebration. With the restoration of the festival during the Restoration and its evolution in the 20th century, the Festa Major has maintained its traditions and has added new elements.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Seguici Festiu, which includes the giants, the mulassa, the ball de bastons, the devils and other festive elements dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition, old dances have been revived, such as the Ball de Gitanes, the Ball de Prims, the Dansa de Mossèn Joan de Vic, the Ball de Cercolets, among others. These historic elements, together with new additions such as the drac, the gegant Carrasclet, the lleó, the basilisc and the castells, contribute to giving Reus its prestige as a reference human tower square.
The Festa Major de Sant Pere is much more than a religious festival: it is a celebration full of popular culture, local pride and a great brotherhood that brings together thousands of people every year. Live a unique experience in which tradition, music and Catalan folklore come together to create unforgettable moments.
