Monument of the Ninth Centenary (Bellcaire d'Urgell)
In the heart of Bellcaire d'Urgell, the Ninth Centenary Monument commemorates one of the most important episodes in the town's history: the conquest and subsequent repopulation of this territory. Located in the town square, this sculptural ensemble pays tribute to the first settlers and all the generations that have contributed to building the identity of Bellcaire d'Urgell.
The history of this place dates back to 1091, when Count Ermengol IV of Urgell conquered Bellcaire from the Muslims. However, the definitive repopulation was not immediate. In 1139, Count Ermengol VI granted a charter of settlement and privileges to a group of settlers, with the aim of cultivating the land and fortifying the old tower of Bellcaire. This first attempt did not succeed, and in 1157, Ermengol VII promoted a new initiative that envisioned the establishment of twelve permanent farmhouses.
To commemorate the 900th anniversary of the conquest of Bellcaire, the City Council erected this monument in 1991, coinciding with the urban development works in the square. Beyond commemorating a historical event, the monument pays tribute to the effort, perseverance, and community spirit of its inhabitants.
The sculptural group consists of nine adult human figures, one for each century of history. One of the figures leads a child by the hand, a detail laden with symbolism that represents population growth and the continuity of new generations.
The Monument to the Ninth Centenary of Bellcaire d'Urgell is an interesting stop to discover the medieval origins of the town and understand the value of its collective memory. It's a space that invites you to contemplate the sculpture and remember the centuries of history of this village in the Noguera region.
