In the heart of Bellcaire d'Urgell, stands the Church of Santa María, a building that combines history, architecture, and tradition. Located between the main street and the main square, this parish church is one of the town's most representative heritage sites and a testament to the transformations the town has undergone over the centuries.

The origins of the church date back to the Middle Ages, although the current building mainly retains elements from the 16th and 18th centuries. It was from 1763 onwards that, under the impetus of the parish priest Jaume Feliu, the church was enlarged and acquired much of its Baroque appearance, with details of classical inspiration.

One of the most striking features is the main façade, dominated by an elegant semicircular arched doorway, crowned by a pediment with an image of the Virgin Mary. Just above it stands an ornamental rose window that adds character to the overall design. The octagonal bell tower is also noteworthy, with four semicircular arched openings and a balustrade crowning its upper section.

In 1966, the church underwent a profound transformation with the construction of a new nave to the south, which considerably altered its original structure. Despite these changes, it still retains facades and architectural elements that reveal its Baroque past.

Included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia, Santa Maria is an interesting stop for those who want to learn about the historical heritage of Bellcaire d'Urgell. A stroll through the town center and a visit to this church is a great way to connect with the history and identity of this corner of the Noguera region.
