  4. Main Square and Town Hall…

In the heart of the historic center of Bellcaire d'Urgell, the Plaça Major and Carrer Major form one of the town's most emblematic spaces. This urban ensemble preserves the essence of the municipality's medieval past and invites visitors to stroll leisurely through its streets, discovering historic buildings, charming corners, and architectural elements that explain Bellcaire's evolution over the centuries.

The Plaza Mayor, located in the northeastern part of the old medieval town, is an open space dominated by two prominent heritage landmarks: the Town Hall (or Casa del Común) and a Baroque fountain. On the south side of the plaza stands the parish church of Santa María, which also contributes to the character of this historic ensemble.

The Bellcaire d'Urgell Town Hall occupies an elegant mansion notable for its Baroque-inspired façade. The ground floor features a portico with three semicircular arches, while the first floor boasts a large balcony with symmetrical openings. The building is crowned with a unique mixtilinear pediment and a gable with seven small semicircular arched windows, details that lend it considerable architectural interest.

In the center of the square stands a Baroque-style fountain, with a sinuous basin and an octagonal pillar decorated with sculpted heads that form the water spouts. The ensemble is crowned by a lamppost that reinforces the ornamental character of this space.

From the main square, Calle Mayor runs through the old town to Plaza del Mercado, while other streets follow the path of the ancient medieval walls. Exploring this area is a great way to discover the historical heritage of Bellcaire d'Urgell and enjoy the atmosphere of a town that preserves the memory of its past.
