Bages
Bages is a region located in the geographical centre of Catalonia, known for its historical and cultural wealth and its natural environment surrounded by mountains and rivers. The Llobregat River runs through the region, providing it with a varied landscape ranging from the fertile lands of the plain to the most mountainous areas. Its strategic location has made Bages a meeting point and crossroads throughout history.
The capital of the region, Manresa, is an industrial and commercial centre with an important historical legacy. Its most emblematic monument is the Seo de Manresa, an imposing Gothic-style basilica that dominates the city. Another place of great importance is the Pont Vell over the Cardener River, a symbol of the city, and the Calle del Balç, which transports visitors to medieval Manresa. The city also has great spiritual relevance, as it was here that Saint Ignatius of Loyola lived and had his mystical experience, which is commemorated today in the Sanctuary of the Cave of Saint Ignatius.
The historical heritage of El Bages is remarkable, with numerous castles and Romanesque churches spread throughout the region. The Monastery of Sant Benet de Bages, founded in the 10th century, is one of the jewels of Catalan Romanesque and a must-see place for its beauty and peaceful surroundings. Also noteworthy is the Castle of Cardona, one of the most important medieval fortresses in Catalonia, with its impressive Collegiate Church of Sant Vicenç, a Romanesque masterpiece.
The region is renowned for its natural surroundings and sports and nature lovers will find a wide range of outdoor activities on offer. The Montserrat Mountain Natural Park, at the southern end of the region, is one of the most iconic places in Catalonia, with its unique peaks and the Montserrat Monastery, an important religious and cultural centre. It is also an ideal place for hiking and climbing.
Gastronomically, Bages is known for its DO Pla de Bages wines, made with local varieties such as Picapoll. Local products such as sausages, mushrooms and cheeses have a special place in the traditional cuisine of the region, which can be enjoyed in its restaurants serving local, home-cooked food.
Bages is also a land of traditional festivals. The most notable are the Fiestas de la Luz de Manresa, which commemorate a legendary miracle related to the construction of the Acequia de Manresa, a medieval engineering work that still supplies water to the city today.
Stay here, explore its historic paths, admire the beauty of its natural landscapes and enjoy the culture and gastronomy that make Bages a region full of charm and history.
